It's that time of year, Day Camp for Cub Scouts!

Cub Scout Pack 372 attended the annual Calumet Council Day Camp this year at the Christ Lutheran Church located at 14700 S. 94th Ave.,Orland Park, IL. For four days the scouts learned and practiced many of the skills needed to be prepared and self-sufficient. Each day was filled with activities such as Slingshots, Archery, and BB Guns. Scouts cooked hot dogs over a self-made solar cooker and even learned how to make their own flashlight using everyday items you find in any home. The Cub Scout Motto is “Be Prepared” and every scout who attended Day Camp this year was that much closer to living that motto.

Lake Sedgewick, a fishing good time!

Orland Park Cub Scout Pack 372 held their annual Fishing Derby this weekend at Orland Park's Lake Sedgewick. Scouts caught tiny sunfish to a 10.5 inch Catfish and everyone caught the fishing fever when someone yelled out “I got one!”

Scouts, Scouts, 100 hundred years of Scouts!

That was the theme of the Orland Days Parade this year in Orland Park, IL. BSA was well represented and the Cub Scout Pack of 372 was there to join in on the celebration! While the Wolf, Bear and Webelos Scouts waved their rank colored flags throughout the procession, the smallest of the spectators also got in on the action. Pack 372 passed out orange colored flags which read “Future Scout” to each of the younger boys along the parade route, the color for a Tiger Scout and the beginning rank in scouting. It was joyful to see their excitement and perhaps the legacy of another 100 years!

As the sun sets over Camp Sullivan in Tinley Park, the Orland Park Cub Scouts of Pack 372 are honored for all their hard work throughout the year. May is an exciting time for Scout Rank Advancement. Every scout takes part in a ceremony where he will shed the old colors of the previous rank – neckerchief, slide, and hat – to a new rank color. This displays how much they have achieved and grown throughout their journey in Cub Scouts. It is a proud moment for both the scout and the parent.

Mr Freeze Chills Pack 372mr. freeze 2

The OP Cub Scouts of Pack 372 watched in amazement as Fermilab engineer Jerry Zimmerman a.k.a. “Mr. Freeze” held a plastic bottle while a thick white fog streamed out as he explained the properties of liquid nitrogen and its uses within everyday life. (Something my scout repeated back to me on the car ride home when he explained how his McDonald Hamburger had previously been frozen by liquid nitrogen)

mr. freeze 1Yet it was not until Mr. Zimmerman placed a capped plastic bottle containing water and liquid nitrogen, boiling at a mind-numbingly cold -320 degrees, inside a paper filled box which seconds later exploded with a deafening bang, were the scouts unable to contain their excitement. Science is definitely more fun with Mr. Freeze around!
